A member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary since 2017, Austen has served as public affairs officer for the flotilla as well as for Division 2, which encompasses five flotillas throughout Central New York.
He is also a member of the Auxiliary’s national staff, where his duties focus upon increasing cybersecurity awareness among the Auxiliary’s 20,000+ members. A graduate of King’s College London and the University of Virginia, Austen is associate professor of cybersecurity at Utica College. He is co-author of the 2014 book, “The Business of Counterterrorism: Public-Private Partnerships in Homeland Security,” and author of the 2020 book, “Disaster Labs: How American States Use Partnerships to Manage the Unthinkable.” He and his wife, Rachel, reside in Clinton with their two children.
John is a certified boat crew member for Coast Guard-approved patrols and search-and-rescue missions. He is the flotilla human resource officer and also a certified telecommunications operator, serving as communications officer for both the flotilla and Central New York Division 2.
He has been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary since 2017. A process engineering technician at Trenton Technology, John is a certified electronics journeyman (RADAR) who served in the U.S. Navy as an avionics instructor and aviation warfare specialist. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a ship boarding team leader. He is a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Electronics. John and his wife, Kimberly, reside in Little Falls.
